Project Overview

Secon Consulting Engineers collaborated closely with Grieve Gillett Architects and the City of Onkaparinga to revitalise the iconic Hopgood Theatre, complementing its newly refurbished interiors with an extensive upgrade to its 40 year old AV and Electrical infrastructure. The project delivered a bold new chapter for the venue while preserving its cultural significance for the community.

Key highlights of the transformation include:

  • 🎭 A bold new visual identity reflecting Hopgood Theatre’s vibrant pink branding, enhancing the venue’s presence and personality.
  • ♿ Improved accessibility, including 10 new wheelchair and companion seating positions to create a more inclusive experience for all patrons.
  • 🍸 A redesigned front-of-house and bar area, offering a modern and welcoming space for pre-show gatherings.
  • 🎶 A new intimate performance space tailored for small-scale productions, expanding the theatre’s creative offerings.
  • 🎤 Enhanced backstage facilities designed to support a diverse range of performers and productions, from local acts to professional tours.

As part of the theatre’s transformation, Secon delivered fully integrated building services engineering, ensuring that the upgraded infrastructure met both current standards and future demands. These services included:

  • đź’ˇ Electrical services – Modernised power distribution, architectural lighting and control systems, and infrastructure to support advanced theatrical lighting.
  • 📡 Electronic systems – Integrated AV, data, security, access control and communication systems to enhance the theatre’s technological capabilities.
  • đźš° Hydraulic services – Upgraded plumbing systems, including backstage amenities and public facilities, designed for reliability and sustainability.

Through this project, Secon Consulting Engineers played a pivotal role in delivering a modern, accessible, and technically sophisticated performing arts venue that will serve the community for years to come.
